Chapter 9!

Searching for Information with Digital Resources.
I never knew using digital sources could be very useful when writing, but after this chapter I feel a little more comfortable knowing it can help. You have to make sure you can identify keywords and phrases, know your research project, plan on basic searches for the best results. Have to plan your advanced searches. This chapter showed me with pictures so I can get a full understanding of how and where to look on certain sites.

Chapter 5!

Evaluation Sources.
When looking at evaluating a source, I now know what factors I should be looking for when doing so. Gave me great advice about finding good information but knowing when it is appropriate to use the information or quotations, you wouldn't want to use a great quote but then have your readers not understand how it connects to your actual piece. When evaluating evidence I now know the 4 main things to ask myself 1. is enough evidence offered? 2. Is the right kind of evidence offered? 3. Is the evidence used fairly? 4. Is the source of the evidence provided? I never knew there were so any steps to evaluating a source before I read this chapter. I now can evaluate the author, publisher, timelines, comprehensiveness, and the genre.

PROPOSAL

Brittney Gard
Prof. Sonia Apgar Begert
English 102
27 Oct. 2015

Introduction:
the research of stem cells has been a very heated issue for quite some time now. Starting in the 50's, when the first bone marrow transplant happened between two identical twins, all the way up to today and counting. With the advanced research scientists and doctors currently have, this field of medicine is always moving forward. There are two different type of stem cells, ESC (embryonic stem cells), that only exist in the earliest stage of life, and non- embryonic stem cells, that appear in later fetal development and stick with you throughout life. Both have huge impacts on todays medicine, but the research of ESC is where most of the attention lies, reason being is because the only way to obtain these cells is from unborn fetuses. With that being said you can see how this subject is very sensitive. My paper will be focusing on why the research of these cells are extremely helpful and what they can achieve. These cells are beyond beneficial and have the potential to set new standards for modern medicine. The research of ESC can lead to the cure of Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease), and so many more. Scientists haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the limitless potential of embryonic stem cell research.

Review of Literature:

Plan to Collect Information:
So far I have plenty of statistics and factual information about my subject, but I plan to read more opinionated articles such as articles on websites or periodicals. I would like to collect more information to why people are against the research, most are religious related through what I have collected so far. I feel I have collected a good amount of sources, but honestly feel that as I am writing my paper, I will find even more sources to help me and the strength of my paper. I do believe I need a few more scholarly reviewed articles that I will find on our schools online library that is offered to us. I think this subject will come with great charts and graphs , I just have yet to research them, that will be my next research step, which I probably will find of google search or possibly a book if I have enough time to go to the library this week. My boyfriend have pretty strong opinions on this subject and has a lot to offer as well to open my eyes on different views on it which will help as well.

Project Timeline:
I am a little behind in this class so once this proposal is all finished, I plan to jump right into finishing my annotated bibliography and my lit review. I really plan on making my introduction and thesis very strong so not only will it pull in my readers but also pull in my attention. I plan on writing a paper that even I am very interested in reading it over and over again. I am excited for this paper because I am learning so much on such an interesting topic.

Incorporating Sources Effectively

Collaborative class lab

1.       In the past twenty years there has been increasing awareness about global warming and its permanent effects. According to Elizabeth Bristow and Amy J. Ftizgerald, “There is a growing scientific consensus that the average global surface temperature has increased since 1861 and that the increase observed in the 20th century is the largest of any century throughout the past [millennium] (IPPC,2001)” (206).

2.       The United States has recently become the most financially dependent Country in the world, “China is now the world's leading creditor nation, while the United States is the world's largest debtor. Beijing is the largest foreign holder of US government debt - passing Japan in 2008 to become, in effect, the [United States] largest foreign creditor” (100).

3.According to Haliza Abdul Rahman, she asks the question, “How long can we continue to foul the earth with the wastes that we produce in industry, agriculture and our homes?” This disturbing question is answered by Gowri Koneswaran. “Although much evidence has been amassed on the negative impacts of animal agricultural production on environmental integrity, community sustainability, public health, and animal welfare, the global impacts of this sector have remained largely underestimated and underappreciated”.

Evaluation the 4 sources "big picture"

Evaluating sources and the “Big Picture”

Justin, Sheldon, Brittney

Comparing and contrasting all 4 different sources.

-Book by a single author

Browsing through books you can obtain more biased point of views.

More research to back up all facts in a book. More information.

Not “peer reviewed”.

Could be out dated.

-Scholarly article from an online database

Completely based on facts and statistics, not bias at all.

No rhetoric.

Are “peer reviewed”.

Possible issue with not being current.

-Article on a website

Usually current.

Potential bias and credibility issues depending on the subscript of the URL.

-Article in an online periodical

Usually current.

Usually 1 author.

Mostly bias.

After taking a careful look at each of the four main sources we will be using to write our research papers, we discovered the pros and cons of each and how each one will be a viable option.

3).Usually we start with the Author, but if no author then we start with the article title because when someone is searching and browsing, the title of an article is the first thing the readers look at to find the reading they want. The title is in Quotations because that is correct and complete MLA format.

4).Environmental defense fund is listed twice, but only once in italics because one will be the name of the site and the other will be the corporation who funds it/publishes. Most times are the same name.

5).The last three items in a citation are

·         Company funding

·         Date of the article

·         Date the article went on web

3 sources (second set)

Chapter 7!

Chapter 7!!!!
This chapter was a big help. In all my English classes and years of writing, organization of my resources and notes was something I never paid close attention too and was good at. This chapter went over all the different ways I can save and organize my notes, or recordings. Goes over all the multiple ways there are and how to use them. It goes into the technical details even on the online and web sources. Creating a bibliography was something I could never do without someone helping me and this gave me a little more of a understanding and tools so I can do it on my own.

Chapter 6

When reading chapter 6 the other night, I absorbed a lot of good advice from it. I learned the main reason why I should even take notes and why its really important. Learned how to record the actually useful information and not just note information I don't really need and waste my time. The things I need to look for when reading material are things that interest me or surprises me or even something that I think I could argue for or against. This is just one of the multiple tips this chapter gave me to be good at note taking. When I take notes, they are usually always in a notebook, and this chapter said to pick a method and use it consistently for the best outcome, so I am already doing good as far as sticking to a method. The section where it talked about "direct Quoting", I felt most of it was common sense and I knew a majority of it, but it is always good to read over that stuff and be reminded again. This chapter had a lot of great tips for note taking and went into depth on each tip. Went into depth of just paraphrasing on its own and taught me some things I didn't know. Also the same with summarizing and taught me the difference between those two. This chapter also goes beyond just note taking and tells you how to use your notes to improve your understanding on your issue your focusing on.

3 sources (first set)

3 Sources:
1.
2. My subject is the benefit of the use of stem cells, so this whole site give me basic information on the importance of stem cells.
3. I can use all this information in my project since it is all scientifically proven and all works great to back up any information I talk about.
4.Things I have learned from the publishers/ authors that have led me to accept this site is the fact that this site is from NIH and HHS, gov approved site.
5. All up to date 2015, very accurate.
6. Extremely educational.
7. Extremely educational, feel confident in containing information from it,
8. Gives me concrete evidence to back up everything I will be writing about.
9. Very likely.

All 3 of these sources have somewhat of the same answers. I only chose sources that I could rely on and feel confident

Chapter 2 & 4

Chapter 2:
gives me advice on how to explore my topic and help me build a plan. Explains powerful tools and helpful actions I should take to be able to continue without be lost. Shows me how to find helpful resources and the correct ones to view. While browsing sources, I am now confident to what to look for and how to appropriately skim and look for what I need. Once I get sources, this chapter gave me tips on how to narrow my topic down even more so I can focus even harder on my issue. I know now to always approach a source with my issue and writing situation on mind.

Chapter 4:
Reading Critically and actively. This chapter gives helpful questions to ask yourself while reading and browsing sources. Each page in this chapter continuously lets you know what to do and ask, I can tell these questions will help a lot while doing my research. This chapter so far has been the most helpful and useful and I will keep going back to it for advice.

Chapter 1 "The Bedford researcher"

While reading Chapter 1 in "The Bedford Researcher" I did a lot of connecting text to world as it explained writing a paper is similar to engaging into a conversation. When things are put into a perspective that I can relate a little more to, it makes things more clear and gives me an easier way to proceed. This chapter gives very detailed tips and steps to give the writer, even when a beginner writer like myself the confidence at taking on such a big project without being so worried. In class we have been going through tips as well and ways to approach this paper in steps rather than a whole. This chapter is just going into more depth about the things we go over in class. In class we are doing more online activities and group work so we get a lot more ideas put out there for ourselves and get immediate feedback. The chapter and the what we have been covering in this week in class are both very helpful and I am happy to be getting this much tips and help through out the paper.
